Summer Painting Intensive
August 21, 2005 - August 26, 2005

"The Thick and The Thin" a recent figure painting by Brian Keeler, oil on panel, 30"x 26"

The human figure and landscape with Brian Keeler

A summer painting workshop is being offered by award-winning painter, Brian Keeler for the beginning student or the seasoned professional in the disciplines of human figure and landscape painting. This intensive period of study will be given over the week of August 21 to the 26th, 2005 and will take place in Wyalusing, PA at the newly remodeled and spacious Wyalusing Community Corporation (WCC) Building. The WCC building is in the former Mcarty Garage at 121 Main Street in Wyalusing. The WCC building now has the front rooms serving as the home for the Blue Heron Art Gallery and for the offices of the Greater Wyalusing Chamber of Commerce.

The class will focus on realistic academic fundamentals of figure drawing from the live model during the morning period of the class. Participants can expect to learn many important and basic principles of a classic realist approach to painting. As Brian Keeler believes, one's ability as a painter is only as strong as the basic understanding of the essentials of drawing and painting. Among these essentials that will be stressed will be, the process of working with simplified quick oil sketches that distill the model’s pose to a basic gesture and armature. Then proceeding on to Grisaille or tonal studies where the student will learn about abstracting and simplifying the form to basic shapes. Finally, after a progression of doing many fast studies to gain practice, confidence and facility the student will learn about color theory and paint quality specific to oil. Toward the end of the week, longer poses will be chosen that will allow for more development and further articulation and detail.

The landscape instruction in the afternoon will stress in the initial stages the importance of composing with attention given to the very basic concerns of placement and spatial distribution as well as proportional harmonies. The lessons gleaned from painting the figure in the morning class will be given a new application as we attempt to capture the essence of the beautiful riverscapes, landscapes and Victorian architecture in and around Wyalusing. The student will also be introduced to perspective principles, both linear and aerial varieties that will be necessary when depicting buildings or the effects of atmosphere. Mr. Keeler's unique color sense and paint application will also be covered. The landscape portion will be for artists working in oil or pastel. The material covered in both morning and afternoon sessions should provide the participant with ample material for growth in order to allow for greater creativity and ability in expressing and recording their own vision.

The week will begin with a welcome and registration on Sunday evening August 21 at 7 p.m. at which time there will be an oil portrait demonstration which will cover many of the principles taught in the classes. This demo is open to anyone regardless of whether they are enrolled in the workshop. The fee for non-participants is $10.

On Thursday evening there will be a lecture and slide presentation which will also be open to the public for a fee of $5. This presentation will be on some of Mr. Keeler’s impressions of traveling and painting in Italy with a focus on Renaissance art. The lecture may also be regarded as an introduction to Renaissance painting in Italy. In this presentation, a brief overview of this dynamic period of history will be given. The focus, however, will be on the paintings of Sandro Botticelli, as an exemplar of the new humanism, rebirth of ancient learning and the melding of antiquity and its myths with Christian beliefs of that period. Botticelli will be presented in comparison with the reactionary and anti-renaissance thrust of the Dominican Priest, Girolamo Savonarla during the last decade of the quatrocento in Florence.

The fee for the entire week is $450 with a deposit of $100 due on July 15 and full tuition required on August 15. Please make checks out to Brian Keeler and mail to PO Box 397, Wyalusing, PA 18853.
